My architecture professors were like this as well. I guess it is a matter of what you find important. You noted the billboard characteristics of temples. But as a media device, it is much deeper than just that. Media is vitally important in establishing a physical holy space. This temple may not follow a historical precedence, and it may not be structurally honest, but the space is not about the structure, it is about the function inside. It may look like a "Potemkin village" but the fairytale image is a result of the ideals sought for inside. Other temples might make better sense than his one. The Nauvoo temple is most profound to me.Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01663142048677532464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499096525132034194.post-18593075082565109582013-09-17T11:53:17.226-06:002013-09-17T11:53:17.226-06:00For an "Architecture" blog I was hoping ...For an "Architecture" blog I was hoping you would actually talk about the architecture of the Mormon temples. I've had an interest in them as an interior designer and ever since I had a friend who was Mormon. Instead you take pot-shots at them and how their architecture is fake because their purpose for their building is fake. Thanks for nothing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499096525132034194.post-69122245203711836032013-06-02T07:20:00.100-06:002013-06-02T07:20:00.100-06:00The bible makes mention of in my fathers house the...The bible makes mention of in my fathers house there are many mansions....bad paraphrase.Brett Stirlinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12182028812677024842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499096525132034194.post-66937120254183979772013-06-02T07:14:20.835-06:002013-06-02T07:14:20.835-06:00The Celestial Room is a 20th century reflection of...The Celestial Room is a 20th century reflection of a 19th century interpretation of exalted living or existsance. Not only do they go for annual fire inspections but 911 calls do occur there on occasion. A large percentage of the temple workers are elderly. I know he's been called before for someone who has slipped on the stairs and another elderly women who had a heart attack. They are just asked to quietly enter the building take care of the business at hand and leave. Hope this answers your question. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499096525132034194.post-26642595963908727742010-10-21T17:47:00.787-06:002010-10-21T17:47:00.787-06:00Very interesting post... My wi...The SD temple has a unique motif throughout. My wife and I were married there by Bill Lewis, the architect, in 2001. He explained some of the symbolism. The ancient Hebrew seal of Melchezidek is inlaid throughout the woodwork, glass and other trim (two interlocked squares with a circle in the center, similar to the Jewish star).

Temples have an ascending layout since the whole purpose of temples is the step by step ascension to God, everything is laid out as a progression to a higher place.

The baptistry is always under ground level, symbolic of resurrection from the grave. To understand the layout of LDS temples you need to understand how Mormons see the meaning of life. It is modelled on the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem with three progressively holier spaces that you pass through. The celestial room is the culminating experience in the temple and represents a return to the presence of God, like the Holy of Holies in ancient Israel.

The celestial room is seperated from the other lower places in the temple by a veil that you pass through, symbolizing passing from this world to the next. This is reflected in the LDS white garment won by Mormons. The garment is symbolic of keeping yourself pure from the outside world and retaining a little bit of paradise within you as you live in a darkened world.

I believe the fire marshall and other city inspectors have full access to the temple when required. They would probably close the temple and allow inspections.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499096525132034194.post-12291695935001596902010-04-16T13:30:58.071-06:002010-04-16T13:30:58.071-06:00:) As a "Mormon in Good Standing", I'...:) As a "Mormon in Good Standing", I've always thought that the San Diego temple was one of the... weirdest... temples I've ever seen. (Aside from the Provo and Ogden temples in Utah, which look like mirrored space-ships) I heard a rumor that it was designed by a Catholic? Who knows.
Anyway, you said you wonder what goes on in the Celestial Room. The Celestial Room could kind of be compared to "God's Living Room". There's a bunch of couches, chairs, and tables containing copies of the scriptures. It is a room for meditation, study, and prayer. So, thats what happens. People dress up in white, and sit on the couch and read or pray or just think. No formal services, rituals, or sermons are held in the Celestial Room.
Also, no, the lobby is not off-limits. In order to pass the guys in white suits at the front desk, you need a recommend, but anything before that is fair game. Most temples usually have a sitting room or lobby for people who arent members of the Church to wait in while their Mormon friends are getting married and such.
And finally, the fire marshalls. I would assume that if there isn't a Mormon fire marshall available, they have to let someone else in. The temple is usually closed a few weeks out of the year for maintenance and repairs, they probably have the temple maintenance crew take a fire marshall around. It's a good question... maybe you could call a couple other temples and see if they know.Sister Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11909730207311949947noreply@blogger.com
